RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of smoking and the levels of self-esteem and self-efficacy in adolescents and to examine the risk factors affecting smoking. DESIGN AND METHODS: The present study is a cross-sectional descriptive study. This study was conducted with a total of 2566 adolescents (13-19 years of age). In order to collect research data, Personal Information Form, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and Self-Efficacy Scale for Children were used. RESULTS: In the current study, the mean age of adolescents was 15.88 ± 1.20 years and the prevalence of smoking was 11.3%. Variables such as age, gender, family type, parental employment status, presence of smokers in the immediate circle, and self-efficacy levels were determined as risk factors that had an impact on smoking. It was found that the total score of the self-efficacy scale increased the probability of smoking by 3.413 times, the academic self-efficacy subscale by 5.064 times, and the emotional self-efficacy subscale by 2.045 times. CONCLUSION: The present study concludes that certain adolescents are in the risk group. The adolescents in the risk of smoking are those who have low levels of self-efficacy, who are older, male, have a nuclear family, whose mothers do not work, whose fathers work, and who have smokers in their immediate circle. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: School nurses can identify students at risk of smoking at an early stage. In addition, training sessions and intervention programs aimed at improving social skills can be developed to boost their self-efficacy.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The global nursing shortage is complex and multifaceted. Despite the policy of increasing the number of nurses, concerns about the sustainability of the nursing workforce in Turkey continue. AIM: To evaluate the relationship between unemployment anxiety, job satisfaction, and migration attitudes among Turkish nursing candidates. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1100 nursing candidates between April and June 2022. The data gathered from the "Personal Form, Job Satisfaction, and Brain Drain Attitudes Scale" were analyzed using logistic regression and decision tree analysis. RESULTS: Of the participants, 67.1% were female, and the mean age was 22.6 ±â€¯1.7 years. Being male (OR = 1.317, 95% Cl 0.994-1.743) having a low income (OR = 1.754, 95% Cl 1.334-2.306), feeling insecure about the future (OR = 2.340, 95% Cl 1.312-4.175), expecting a lower wage than desired (OR = 2.015, 95% Cl 1.132-3.586), and employment precariousness (OR = 1.786, 95% Cl 1.355-2.353) increase the possibility of experiencing high unemployment anxiety. On the other hand, family support for living abroad (OR = 0.579, 95% CI 0.408-0.821) and job satisfaction (OR = 0.799, 95% CI 0.692-0.921) decrease unemployment anxiety (p < 0.05). According to the results of the decision tree analysis, the host country's pull factors are the best predictors of the nursing candidates' intention to work abroad as nurses (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The increasing prevalence of unemployment anxiety and migration tendencies among nursing candidates requires the evaluation of policies aimed at increasing the number of nursing graduates in Turkey.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Problematic internet use negatively affects adolescents' health behaviors and school success. PURPOSE: This study evaluated the effects of a solution-focused approach (SFA) on adolescents' problematic internet use, health behaviors, and perceived academic success. METHODS: A randomized controlled experimental design was used with pre-test-post-test. The sample comprised 128 middle school students, with 64 in the intervention group and 64 in the control group. Data were collected using an information form, Young's Internet Addiction Test, the Nutrition-Exercise Behavior Scale, and the Nutrition-Exercise Attitude Scale. The intervention group attended six SFA group meetings. RESULTS: "The intervention group's, mean pre- and post-test internet addiction scores were 35.65 ± 4.43 and 17.07 ± 5.01, respectively. There were statistically significant differences between the post test groups (p < 0.05) for mean internet addiction, total nutrition-exercise attitude, and total nutrition-exercise behavior and subdimension (except regular meals) scores and perceived academic success. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE AND RESEARCH: SFA may prevent students' uncontrolled internet use, help them gain positive health behaviors, and increase perceived academic success. The school nurse, on the other hand, may support the adolescent and their families with solution-focused interview strategies.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of foot ulcers on male patients diagnosed with type-2 diabetes, foot care and treatment, and the difficulties, experiences, feelings, and perspectives of male patients regarding foot ulcers. METHODS: This study designed as a qualitative descriptive study. The study sample included 14 male patients diagnosed with a diabetic foot ulcer. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS: Three main themes were identified from the interviews: diabetic foot ulcer development, diabetic foot ulcer effects, and healthcare experiences with the diabetic foot ulcer. CONCLUSION: The results of this study may serve to provide a guideline for healthcare professionals to develop foot care strategies. While the patients who participated in the study were well-informed about foot care and diabetes management, their self-care practices were poor. Good management of diabetes and external factors were correlated with the development of foot ulcers.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Healthcare professionals' "cultural prejudices" toward individuals' cultural beliefs, attitudes, and perceptions affect the care they provide. Their awareness of their bias is closely associated with the quality of healthcare provided. PURPOSE: This study was designed to assess nurses' perceptions regarding providing care to Syrian refugee patients using metaphors and to evaluate their views based on these metaphors. METHODS: The participants in this qualitative study consisted of 80 nurses who worked in Level 1 and Level 2 health institutions. Data were collected using an interview form prepared by the researchers. The form included descriptive characteristics of the nurses and two expressions used to determine the nurses' opinions on providing care for Syrian refugee patients. The nurses were given an incomplete sentence, which was "Providing care for a Syrian refugee patient…because…," and were asked to complete the blanks. The data were analyzed using the content analysis method. RESULTS: On the basis of "providing care for Syrian refugee patients," four categories of metaphors were determined: occupational awareness, health promotion, a difficult process/resistance, and providing service in vain. The participants generated 50 metaphors, with "humanity," "a baby/little child," and "a barrier" as the three most used metaphors, belonging to the "occupational awareness" and "a difficult process/resistance" categories, respectively. CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: The metaphors of nurses regarding giving care to Syrian refugee patients were mostly concentrated in the categories of "occupational awareness" and "a difficult process/resistance." Metaphors generated by the nurses offer a powerful research tool to reveal, understand, and explain nurses' personal perceptions and to develop and support nursing care accordingly. In addition, the subject of transcultural nursing should be discussed more extensively in nursing education programs. Understanding the social context of refugees is very important during the nursing care process.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Learning and developing communication skills fundamental to solution-focused thinking increases the confidence of nursing students towards individuals and improves their self-efficacy, thereby enabling these students to plan appropriate care. PURPOSE: To evaluate solution-focused thinking skills and self-efficacy levels of nursing students and to determine the factors affecting these variables as well as the relationship among them. METHOD: This was a descriptive and correlational study. The study was conducted between March and June 2019 with 337 nursing students from two universities with different curricula. Data were collected using a "personal information form," the "solution-focused inventory," and the "self-efficacy scale." RESULTS: A statistically significant positive relationship was observed in the total scores on the solution-focused inventory and self-efficacy scale and the mean scores on the completing behavior and dealing with obstacles on the self-efficacy scale. In addition, a moderate relationship (r = 0.447, p < 0.01) was observed between the total solution-focused inventory scores and mean scores of completing behavior on the self-efficacy scale. CONCLUSIONS: The nursing students had above-average mean scores on the solution-focused inventory and self-efficacy scales. However the students can further enhance their problem-solving ability by improving their solution-focused skills and self-efficacy.

RESUMEN

AIMS: To determine the state-trait anxiety levels and solution-focused thinking skills of primary care nurses/midwives during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to evaluate the factors affecting these variables and the determinants of state-trait anxiety levels. BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 outbreak has created intense anxiety in nurses/midwives that may affect the care they provide. Nurses and midwives may manage anxiety using solution-focused thinking skills. METHODS: This descriptive correlational study included 170 nurses/midwives at 61 family health centres evaluated from 1 August to 14 September 2020. RESULTS: The participants' state and trait anxiety scores were above average, indicating a moderate level of anxiety and the mean total solution-focused inventory scores were at a moderate level. It was determined that 47.9% of the variance in state anxiety scores could be explained by trait anxiety, age, years of professional experience, chronic illness, type of work shift during the pandemic, follow-up of patients diagnosed with COVID-19 using computed tomography or a COVID-19 test, and whether the institution was taking necessary measures against COVID-19. There was a negative relationship between state anxiety and solution-focused inventory total score. CONCLUSION: Nurses/midwives displayed a moderate level of anxiety and solution-focused thinking skills during the COVID-19 pandemic. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: Steps should be taken to improve nurses' solution-focused thinking skills to enable them to organise quickly and manage care processes successfully in extraordinary circumstances such as pandemics. Moreover, personal empowerment programmes should be recommended for nurses and midwives to help them cope with anxiety.

RESUMEN

AIMS: To determine the main driving factors affecting the senior nursing students in their decision to migrate and to evaluate the effect of attitude towards migration in career planning. BACKGROUND: In order to promote the nursing workforce, it is important to understand the factors affecting the decisions to migrate. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1,410 Turkish nursing students. The data, which were collected using the Descriptive Form and Attitude Scale for Brain Drain (BD-s), were analysed with the multiple regression and decision tree analysis. RESULTS: The mean score of attitudes towards migration was 56.30 ± 12.09 (min 16- max 80). The main push-pull drivers to migrate were the socio-political factors and working conditions. The BD-s score was higher in the participants, who had overseas experience, had career plans and studied in a metropolitan city. The strongest variable predicting career planning was the attitude towards migration. CONCLUSION: The opinions of the students on career planning and their intentions to migrate indicated that the shortage of nurses would continue in Turkey in the future. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: The prospects of the nursing candidates regarding the nursing profession should be addressed considering their expectations for initial salaries, career development and salary increases.

RESUMEN

AIM: This study aimed to determine the effect of a transtheoretical model-based motivational interview method on self-efficacy, metabolic control, and health behaviour in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS: A randomized controlled study design was used. The study was conducted with 50 individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus, divided into an intervention group and a control group. The researcher held motivational interviews with the patients in the intervention group. Both groups were observed at the beginning of the study and 6 months after the baseline interview. The study data were collected between January 8 and November 18, 2014. RESULTS: Comparing the intervention and the control groups, the differences in the level of self-efficacy and participants' metabolic values were significant (P < .05). The number of participants in the action stage of the intervention group for nutrition, exercise, and medication use significantly increased compared with the control group (P < .05). CONCLUSION: The transtheoretical model-based motivational interview method increased the self-efficacy level of participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus, which helped them improve their metabolic control and health behaviour stages over this 6-month period.

RESUMEN

Introduction: The individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus were supported with the individual motivational interview in the previous randomized controlled trial. The aim of this study was to assess whether the effect of motivational interview persists relative to the self-efficacy, metabolic control, and health-behavioral change of them. Methods: This study was contacted a cross-sectional design. This study was the follow-up to the previous randomized controlled trial. Total of 32 participants, including 18 from the intervention group and 14 from the control group, were contacted. No new intervention was performed to previous groups (control and intervention). The participants in the intervention and control groups were contacted by phone in the 18th month, and their self-efficacy, metabolic control and health behaviors were assessed. Results: The intergroup comparisons showed that the difference between the sixth month and 18th month was statistically significant except for medical treatment self-efficacy subscale score, postprandial blood glucose and waist circumference. The groups were similar in terms of their use of medicine, nutrition and physical activity behavior stages according to the 18th-month follow-up. Conclusion: This study found that the self-efficacy scores of the intervention group decreased negatively, and their metabolic values increased negatively in the 18th months, compared with the sixth month. In this respect, it is recommended that motivational interviews should be carried out at certain intervals assessing the characteristics of participants without discontinuing them after the intervention.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer is a disease leading to various neuropsychiatric behavioral disorders, and the most common symptom observed during the prognosis of Alzheimer's disease is dysmnesia. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of reminiscence therapy on cognitive functions, depression, and quality of life in Alzheimer's patients. METHODS: The present study was a randomized controlled single blind study with two groups, which was designed in the experimental pretest-posttest pattern in the city of Konya, Turkey. It was decided to include a total of 60 elderly individuals. Information form that evaluated socio-demographic characteristics and disease history of individuals in intervention and control groups and was developed by the researcher. Standardized Mini-Mental State Examination (SMMSE), Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia, and the Quality of Life in Alzheimer's Disease (QOL-AD) Scale were used to collect the data. Reminiscence therapy was applied once a week and lasted for 8 weeks. Every session took 60 minutes. Groups consisted of six people. RESULTS: Mini-Mental Test, depression, and quality of life mean scores of the elderly in intervention group before reminiscence therapy program increased after the administration, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). In the intergroup comparison, a significant difference was found between elderly individuals' posttest Mini-Mental Test, depression, and quality of life mean scores (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that regular reminiscence therapy should be considered for inclusion as routine care for the improvement of cognitive functions, depressive symptoms, and quality of life in elderly people with Alzheimer.
